Rough Sketches

These sketches are exploring the relationship between spaces, be it shapes (dome, hexagonal prism, cylinder, rectangular prism) or the division of spaces, in what they 'say' to do.

There will be 3 main spaces (top, middle, basement)
1. Glass dome, where my character can sit and think, overlooking the land. Place of reflection, close to the heavens.
2. 'Den', where the study room is. Only three windows (every second surface of the hexagonal prism), therefore not too much light and interesting shadows. Tall book shelves with ladder. Instruments in shelves too. Lots of storage space- cluttered with interesting things. This place could represent earth or the present - where the bulk of the progressional thinking is done.
3. Basement. Relaxation and enjoyment happens here- this is where the character would entertain guests of high intellect and they would drink from the bar, have snacks and discuss matters of importance. Could symbolise 'hell' or the underground world as it could be a place of sin where alcohol is drunk.

I tried to have the ideaology of heaven, earth and hell in my design as the painting did have that undercurrent of God being in the background, inferring that everything that you can learn i.e. the 'mysteries of life' have been created by God.

The transitional space is a glass enclosed spiral staircase. I thought it was appropriate to make this glass as it could be a place of reflection.

Site ideas...

I would like to use a mixture of the last two for my site idea. I would like my tower to sit on a hill fairly removed from any towns (to make it darker at night), overlooking rough seas and rocky terrain with lush green grass.

Inspiration

Model experimentation

This is the shape that I developed to create the dome shape out of perspex .

I decided to place the model in a green, natural environment as it would be similar to the site that I would choose- far away from other houses. Ideally my site would be on the top of a hill overlooking greenery and rugged rocks- to evoke thought and reflection. Hopefully these images about capture an ethereal quality that I would like to evoke- especially with the glass dome and glass spiral staircase. The sun would beam in here during the day and would provide access to the stars at night.

Exploration AND Narrative

Themes:
- God (in background painting) always in the back of his mind- ideas of questioning God arose at this time.
- The World
- Space, universe, limitless, infinity of nothing.
- Exploration and human's need or intrigue of new things- longing/ thirst for knowledge
- Intellect, thinking, academia
- Power that comes with knowledge.
- Logic, reason, theory of knowledge, philosophy

Visuals to take note of:
- God beams
- Dramatic lighting
- Adult male
- Cluttered, dusty, musty
- Contained
- Green cloak (importance, intellect, scholarly)
- Books- symbol of human's progression (knowledge that we have acquired)
- Placement of objects is reminiscent of how renaissance artworks were- staged, triangular formations (signaling towards the heavens- allegorical)
- Dark shadows that have depth- deep in thought
- Introverted, inclusive
- Void- stillness and quietness to the scene
- Harmonious
- Pensive moment- voyer, we almost interrupt this frozen moment.

Ideas for the character:
- Scholar, intellectual
- Disheveled looking (spends all their time studying)
- Introverted
- Hoards Books and academic instruments
- Sits and thinks a lot
- Discusses their thoughts with other like minded people to relax
- Intense personality (completely absorbed in what they are doing)
- Inquisitive
- Content with their insular life, surrounded by books. Doesn't need ample human interaction.

NARRATIVE----->

" The scholar is absorbed in his world, his den, comfortably surrounded by
instruments that reassure his purpose. "
